Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, purchased Alex in 1977 from a pet shop in the Northwest Side. She began a 30-year study that would change our understanding of the intelligence of birds. Her research with Alex disproved the belief that birds can only imitate human language without understanding meaning.
