World of Warcraft Upgrades and Item Upgrading
Upgrades increase the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. They also boost extra bonuses, such as PvE damage and crit chance.
If the weapon's upgrade item template is in %, the weapon will gain 3percent of its previous damage for every time it is upgraded.

Components
upgrade item components are items that can be slotted into armor, weapons, and trinkets in order to provide a stat bonus or extra effect while they're in use. They can be obtained through crafting, buying from vendors or trading with other players, or looting. Some upgrades can also be accompanied by special cosmetic effects.
Upgrade components can only be applied to equipment that has a slot. The item must be at least upgraded to blue before a component can be used.
